FELTHAM COMMUNITY BOXING WOMEN and girls free SESSIONS a hit!

Tuesday 27th August 2024

What a great active partnership between Feltham Community Boxing Club, This Girl Can Box and London Boxing. Members of the club enjoyed free training sessions and This Girl Can Box founder and London Regional Secretary Terri Kelly organised visiting speakers Aya Hijazi (Elite national champion) and Nida Khalid (an experienced and very enthusiastic judge). After a good work-out, Aya and Nida told of their very different journeys and accomplishments in the sport.

Nida told of her somewhat unusual way into becoming a judge and how the community in boxing is so strong, it keeps her hooked. “The support I get is incredible,” she said “I just love it and I love being ringside.”

Aya had a tough route in as rules needed to change before she could compete; boxing with a Hijab was prohibited until a change in 2019. This certainly tested Aya’s strength and determination. Then there was Covid which meant no one could train, let alone compete. Her steadfast commitment and desire to fulfil her boxing dream paid off as she became the London and then the National Champion in 2024. Her wonderful (and heavy) belts were on display on the day. What an inspiration!

Thanks to all for their participation and positive feedback. We even had a few attendees volunteering to judge. They will be included in the next course in January; I look forward to seeing them on the circuit.

FELTHAM COMMUNITY BOXING RUNNING GIRLS AND WOMEN'S SESSIONS IN AUGUST

Sam Tabuteau, Sports Editor•

Wed, Jul 31, 2024 - https://hounslowherald.com/feltham-community-boxing-running-girls-and-womens-sessions-in-august-p25705-308.htm

Feltham Community Boxing Club is running sessions in August as part of an Active Partnership with This Girl Can Box & London Boxing.

The aim is to encourage and empower girls and women through boxing, and sessions will take place on Tuesday, August, 13 and 27 from 6 pm - 7:30 pm.

Terri Kelly - London Regional Secretary/This Girl Can Box founder recognises the importance of keeping girls engaged with sport through their teens and hopes the sessions will act as encouragement for girls to come down and try boxing.

"Not only are the sessions great fun, but they are good for physical fitness, and mental well-being and help bolster confidence. We recognise that many girls drop out of sports in their teens, and thereafter, sport is not given high priority in their lives. Of course, this is detrimental to women’s long-term wellbeing.

"As boxing is often seen as a male-dominated sport, we wanted to demystify preconceptions and create a safe, all-female space that encourages and empowers participants.

"Get yourself down to Feltham Community Boxing Club to participate in an all-women’s session, guided by high-level coaches. Bring your mum, your aunties, your niece and your friends down."

Women from different cultural and religious backgrounds will attend as special guests - alongside taking part and encouraging, they will talk about their journeys, achievements and the barriers they had to overcome along the way.

Guests range from a 12-year-old boxer to elite champions to women who’ve become high-level officials in the sport.

Feltham Boxing Club have been serving the local community since 2009 and were winners at the Hounslow Community Awards in July.
